Donor Spotlight: A Birthday To Help Others

Emily Kolb Hosts Donation Drive

For Emily Kolb’s birthday party, she and 22 of her friends donated more than $500 worth of toys, books, and games to City House’s emergency youth shelter, My Friend’s House.

When Emily Kolb’s mom asked her what she wanted for her 11th birthday, she couldn’t think of anything she really needed. Then she remembered seeing a segment on Disney Channel’s “The Time I…” about a girl who organized a donation drive.  Emily decided she would use her birthday party to do the same for children at City House’s emergency youth shelter.

Emily first learned about City House’s emergency youth shelter, My Friend’s House, during vacation bible school (VBS) when she was 7. Emily said she remembers it specifically because of the shelter’s name. “At first, I thought we were collecting stuff for a friend of someone at our church,” said Emily. “So I never forgot learning about it.”

When Emily sent out invitation to her birthday party this year, she inserted a card asking her friends to purchase gifts for the children at My Friend’s House instead of for her. “My friends thought it was really cool,” said Emily.  “Even a few who couldn’t make it to the roller skating party, still donated.”

In all, 22 of Emily’s friends donated to her birthday donation drive.  “It was awesome to see how much stuff we collected,” she said. “Some of my friends are planning on doing something similar for charities that are important to them.”
