Girl Scout Troop 8737 and Hunt Student Council plan Frisco THON to raise money and awareness of homeless youth in Frisco
Girl Scout Troop 8737, which is made up of 8th grade students at Hunt Middle School in Frisco, are working together with their Student Council to plan and execute the first-ever Frisco THON. Frisco THON is a six-hour dance-a-thon planned for Saturday, March 1 at Hunt Middle School, from 5 – 11 pm. Students will register as dancers and raise money to help City House, which has been sheltering homeless youth in Collin County for over 25 years. The nonprofit is expanding its services into Frisco this year to better serve its residents.
The members of Troop 8737 were looking for a Silver Award project that would help struggling teens in Frisco after they learned about homeless teens living on the streets and in cars. Homeless youth often find themselves searching for shelter in Plano or Dallas, far away from their schools and friends. City House was the perfect beneficiary of the project because they were already serving homeless in Collin County.
With the support of Hunt Student Council and the blessing of the school faculty, Frisco THON will be an evening filled with dancing and games. Student Council Faculty Advisor Jeffrey Walton said, “This will be the most fun the students will ever have earning service hours.” The student council members are working to build excitement for the event and get as many of the students and faculty involved as possible. The student-run event will offer them a chance to develop and execute a fundraiser from start to finish, building leadership and character.
“We hope this will be the first Frisco THON and the students at Hunt will continue this for years to come,” explained Girl Scout Samantha Buckalew. “It would be great if all the middle schools in FISD held their own Frisco THON and we had a friendly competition to see who raises the most money.”
Troop 8737 has been busy recruiting Hunt Middle School students, and has already signed up 120, as of the end of January! Their big picture goal – to have every middle school in Frisco holding a Frisco THON and competing against each other, all for homeless kids.
